002 – Clear writing, clear thinking

Writing is painful because is precise. For the same reason, it is very helpful.

When thoughts are swimming around my mind they are vague and undefined. They are symbols of things and not the things themselves. They are brief and cryptic post-it notes. Differently, writing forces me to pin down those thoughts. It feels like hunting thoughts trying to escape being defined.

I have been thinking about many things lately, but most of this thinking has been vague. I struggle to recall and report what it was about. I am left with blurred feelings about how that thinking made me feel. Feelings that feel like the aftertaste of a peculiar meal: you can tell that you ate something strange but is hard to recall what it was.

What’s the value of vague thinking? It is useful in any way? Well, I am not being precise about which thinking I am writing about. Some of it may be useful, some of it may not.

Mmm, let’s challenge me. Let’s see if I can shortlist some precise and useful ideas that I have been thinking about lately:

  1. Practice makes better. When uncertain about what to do with my time, I can practice activities without aiming at any particular output from that activity other than getting better at the activity iteself. This seems true for writing.
  2. Headspace requires regular cleaning and organising. When I take a step back form what I am doing and give my mind some space to evolve, I normally feel more engaged and happy about the activities that I do thereafter. Practically speaking, what I do is to sit back and do nothing for a little while until a certain idea has come back 3+ times nagging and asking for enactment. During this period I am able to organise my thoughts. I examine how I feel and what’s roaming around my mind. I let go of urges I have mixed feelings towards. In doing this I clean up and organise headspace.
  3. When discontent with the conditions take action. Sometimes I find myself discontent with something. In these situations I found most helpful to gather together energies and react. I just do something. I try whatever seems to be a possible solution to what I am discontent about. Many attempts fails. I just keep trying until I land onto something promising. It usually works and seems to be making me feel much better than simply indulging in the discontent passively.
  4. Writing makes thinking more precise and therefore more actionable. For more details, see the present post.
  5. Observation: I feel like I am constantly hitting computational limits of my brain when trying to think about other people and groups because I am constantly noticing and adding variables and I rarely feel like in the position to make any inference because I know that more relevant variables are about to come.
  6. Making things clear is slow and can hardly be rushed. The strongest argument in support of this statement is just to try making things clear very fast and see what happens.
  7. Following from (6), the road to robust understanding and effective acting requires patience. I am not convinced that this is a valid entry for my challenge. It is not very precise.

Did I win the challenge? Perhaps. I would give myself a score of 6/10. Some of the shortlisted ideas are quite concrete, especially the earlier ones. However, I feel my answers got vaguer as I progressed down the list.
